In a small Midwest town at the end of World War II, the Rubinson girls are governed by the strict unwritten rules of their time and place, although Peggy, the younger sister, steals from Victory Gardens, guiltily shoplifts her family's Christmas presents, hopes someone tall will ask her for a date, and befriends a girl whose family has escaped the Holocaust. Her life is suddenly changed by a disaster to her beautiful, beloved older sister, and both of them need to keep secrets from everyone, even themselves.
This is a story of two sisters, in the 1940's, the time historians say when we lost our innocence.The story ranges from a small Midwest town to New York and a hard-working farm in Minnesota. The sisters follow all the rules for "nice" girls but those rules fail to protect the older sister, a beautiful high school homecoming queen. Both sisters have secret lives what would destroy them if they were known, and the girls must make peace with those secrets as they come of age.

I loved this book! Perhaps it's because I am of a certain age wherein I can 'relive' the 40's knowing full well the mores of the time . . . women were just beginning to think about their options in the business world while being held back by traditional expectations at the time on the parts of the parents. The differences in siblings (in this case, sisters) and what their parents don't know but think they know about their children. I enjoyed it totally . . . a very easy, uncomplicated and straightforward read.Product details

Almost Lost, Nearly Found explores how we really can find ourselves, and our own happiness, in the most unexpected and unconventional ways....Nearly anyone can relate to this story about two sisters coming to terms with expectations--their own, their family's and society's--set against the backdrop of Indiana and Manhattan during WWII.
I loved this book! Ms. Hammerslough gives us a detailed, insightful look into the troubled mind of a high school beauty. This Homecoming Queen's struggle with reality after a life threatening crisis impacts her entire family.
Some will come out heroes; others will desperately cling to the status quo as they resist change to the bitter end.
This is a charming, sensitively told, often humorous look at a family in transition. Bravo to Ms. Hammerslough. I look forward to reading more uplifting books such as this, and hope the author will have another coming soon.

I fell right into this book , a story told with affection and insight about a family in Indiana during the time of the second world war. The book reflected the positives and negatives of small time life and I had an uncanny sense of being there. Mostly it was the story of two sister who, although they were very different in many ways, had a bond which helped each of them navigate the process of growing up. I could not wait to send this book to my sister
